For two decades, entrepreneur and designer Mabeo has produced custom furniture in his hometown of Gaborone. In 2006, he established the studio Mabeo Furniture and began collaborating with local artisans in Botswana to create a design collection that reflects African craft expertise in woodworking, textiles, and basketry. From the outset, the studio has collaborated with revered contemporary designers including Patricia Urquiola, Patty Johnson, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Luca Nichetto, and Scholten and Baijings, on sustainable, humanely produced pieces and projects that celebrate African heritage and support local craft economies.
Mabeo participates in a variety of international design fairs including Milan Design Week, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, and the London Design Festival. His studio was awarded ICFF Editors Awards in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
For GUILD, Mabeo Furniture have collaborated with award winning design artist Porky Hefer on further exploration of his human-scale nest series which have been celebrated at the most important design fairs around the world.
